James’ Post: The 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge

For the month of April, I will be participating in the 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge, hosted by Food Solutions New England. This is a three-week, 21 day program which sends articles on a daily basis for reading and discussion. The readings regard subjects like discrimination and social inequality and how they relate to food systems. The goal of this challenge is to raise awareness of disparities in the food system and, ultimately, create a more equal environment that benefits all of us.

The 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge is coordinated by the University of New Hampshire Sustainability Institute. Some of the core values of the program include democratic empowerment, racial equity and dignity for all, sustainability, and trust. Therefore, even if you choose not to participate in the challenge, by shopping locally at the farmer’s market, you are doing your part to help increase the sustainability of the foods you consume, ensuring well-being for both you and the planet.

Food Solutions New England is an organization with the goal of producing at least 50% of the area’s food locally by the year 2060. This can be accomplished through sustainable farming practices, fishing practices, and community involvement. This is clearly an ambitious goal, however, one which can be achieved when the general population consumes more diverse foods, healthier foods, and more land is devoted to producing food. This program has been based off of three years of research and input from New Englanders to give the people what they want.
