Winter Farmers’ Market in Rollinsford, March 10th

Thanks to everyone who came and made February’s Winter Farmers’ Market and CSA Day such a smashing success and, with a count of 2,535, helped us break the market attendance record! For a glimpse of the day, and some very nice posts from first-time visitors:

Our next Winter Farmers’ Market is on Saturday, March 10th, inside the Wentworth Greenhouses in Rollinsford, NH, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A full list of the 50+ participating farmer and food producers, and the products they will be selling can be found at www.seacoasteatlocal.org. Please note the change in scheduling — both markets in March take place in Rollinsford, with the last two markets for April in Exeter.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spice it up for late-winter flavor! Between the hot peppers, herb blends, and relishes, it’s easy to cook up new tastes for a fresh take on winter foods. Look for dried hot peppers and herb blends from The Herb Farmacy, spices and rubs from Hubba Hubba Foods, and relishes from Riverside Farm.
  • March is the perfect month to eat up all the remaining garlic. It won’t store for much longer, and its flavor and health benefits are most welcome at this time of year.
  • Sausages and meals made from local meat with flavors from around the world: chorizo sausage from Kellie Brook Farm; ropa vieja sausage from Popper’s Artisanal Meats; mulligatawny, posole, caldo verde, and Moroccan pockets from Riverslea Farm.
  • The Soup Guy features a great variety of flavorful soups. Recent favorites have been Ole Mole Chili, Spiced Carrot and Lime Soup, and Cuban Citrus Black Bean Soup.
  • There will also be an amazing variety of vegetables, meats, milk, cheese, eggs, baked goods, prepared meals, and more sweet and savory treats.

Composting at the Market

We are excited to announce that EcoMovement Consulting & Hauling will be joining us at the March 10th Indoor Farmers’ Market, as well as for the remaining markets this season. EcoMovement is a Portsmouth based company that is helping us all work toward Zero Waste. We know them best for their composting services, which enables businesses, schools, residences, and special events to compost a wide range of materials back into soil — and soil is a key piece of local agriculture.

With EcoMovement coming to the markets, we’ve made some changes! Water cups and cooking demonstration sample materials will be compostable, as are many other materials vendors use for ready to eat foods at the market. All food scraps (meat and dairy included), most paper products, and bioplastics (used by vendors already composting, like White Heron Tea) are compostable. EcoMovement staff will be on hand to explain and help us compost as much as we can!

According to the EPA, the US generates more than 34 million tons of food waste each year, and less than 3% is composted. We very happy to welcome EcoMovement to the market and take another step toward changing that statistic!

Activities at the Market

  • Free kids activity with Tidewater School will keep them entertained while during your shopping trip.
  • Non-Profit at the market: Meet the folks from the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) and learn more about the important connections between water quality and local agriculture!
  • Food donations will also be collected by the Seeds of Faith Food Pantry of Rollinsford — consider buying something fresh for those in need.

  • Market Shuttle: Easy parking, with a free shuttle van running continuously from additional parking provided by Salmon Falls Stoneware, 75 Oak Street in Dover, around the corner from the Wentworth Greenhouses.

  • SNAP & Debit Tokens: SNAP (foodstamps) can now be used at the winter farmers’ market — SNAP customers swipe their EBT cards at the market info booth, and then use tokens to shop with approved vendors. Help us spread the word about this important new project to provide access to wholesome foods to people of all incomes. Debit card customers can also purchase tokens to be used with all vendors. For more information, email [email protected].
