Slow Food Seacoast and the Heirloom Harvest Project will host Tom Stearns, president of High Mowing Organic Seed Company and the Center for Agricultural Economy in Vermont, for a discussion of tools for building healthy food systems at the Portsmouth Pearl, 45 Pearl Street in Portsmouth on March 15, 2012. The evening will include a mixer from 5–6 p.m. with appetizers and a cash bar featuring local beer and wine. Tom Stearns will speak at 6 p.m., followed by a discussion and seed exchange. All seed savers are encouraged to bring their seeds to trade. Admission is free but space is limited, reserve online.

Tom Stearns is the founder of High Mowing Seeds, an independently owned 5-acre farming operation that grows and sells hybrid and open-pollinated organic seeds. In addition to their own property, High Mowing sources seed from other certified organic growers. Stearns is also a leader of an agricultural renaissance among the farming communities around Hardwick, Vt., which has been cited recently as a model of sustainable agriculture in the recent book by Ben Hewitt, The Town That Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food. Stearns has served on the boards of numerous agricultural organizations, most notably as president of The Center for an Agricultural Economy since 2008 and co-president of NOFA-VT since 2004.
