Local Food Report: Gardening for Good in Lee, NH

It’s thanks to the efforts of home gardeners like Dennis Chasteen, that locally-grown food is made available through Seacoast area food pantries. We’ve long been admirers of his endeavor to provide fresh vegetables to the Seacoast Family Food Pantry in Portsmouth, and were able to visit his garden in Lee, NH, when it was included in a recent tour. Pictured here are just some of the 24 beds he maintains, already in their second planting, and dedicated to the needs of the food pantry.

As the season’s harvest pours in, consider sharing some of your bounty with a local food pantry. Our Food Donations resource page has a listing of pantries that welcome donations of fresh food, and includes information regarding Seacoast Grow-A-Row and Maine Harvest for Hunger, programs that promote growing for those in need.

Local Food Report features sources of local food on the Seacoast, including farmsfarmers’ marketsfarmstands, and restaurants and stores. For more information on donating fresh produce to food pantries, visit www.seacoasteatlocal.org.
