The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) will host a free presentation and discussion with Dan Kittredge, Director of the Real Food Campaign, on Wednesday, August 24th. The event theme will be Nutrient Dense Crop Production — a way of creating nutrient rich soil to produce high quality food for human and animal consumption.
“Nutrient dense crop production is a form of biological farming that works to balance and blend all the necessary minerals in the soil that humans and animals need in their bodies,” said Kitteredge. “Through close observation, added amendments, and regularly applied drenches and foliar sprays, the vitality and energy of the soil and plants are enhanced to produce healthier crops, greater yields, extended seasons and longer shelf life. Common problems like insects, disease and weeds are incompatible with more nutrient rich soil and the complex compounds and carbohydrates developed in the plants, and so these problems diminish and can eventually disappear.”
The meeting at MOFGA on August 24th is designed to acquaint people with the work of the Real Food Campaign, and to introduce a course for commercial farmers, which will be offered again at MOFGA in one-day sessions on two Wednesdays, October 12, 2011 and March 7, 2012, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The cost of the course is $150 and substantial financial aid is available, due to a generous grant from the Lattner Foundation, to make it possible for those farmers who want to attend to be able to do so. Enrollment is limited to 20 farmers, so early registration is recommended.
The mission of the Real Food Campaign is to increase the quality of the food supply. All people who share this concern are invited to attend the free introductory meeting at MOFGA on August 24, whether they plan to attend the course or not.
