Emily’s Post: Getting Started with SEL!

Editor’s Note: Welcome Emily! Emily was referred to us by our intern Brooke, who finished with us in December. We love getting word of mouth referrals for interns and knew quickly that Emily would be a great fit for us. We are looking forward to her work with customers at market, taking advantage of her top notch organizational skills and learning what we can about how to make our markets more friendly to those who are gluten-free or have other dietary restrictions.

Hello, my name is Emily and I am thrilled to be an intern for Seacoast Eat Local!  I am a junior at the University of New Hampshire majoring in Nutrition: Dietetics.  Being a nutrition major, it is not going to be a surprise to hear that I love everything about food!  I’m going to be honest, though, I do not know much about how food comes from the ground to my grocery store.  That being said, I am very excited to learn as much as I can about farming practices and sustainability.  Please do not be shy to talk to me about anything related to how this fresh food is produced!

In the classroom, I have learned how more nutrients are present in food from sustainable, local farms and am excited to participate with an organization that supports local farms.  A personal goal of mine is to attract more of the UNH population to farmer’s markets and to help advertise the benefits of buying locally farmed foods.  A healthy lifestyle begins with putting wholesome food in your body, and I am thrilled to buy my own local foods to fuel myself at our farmer’s markets.  I am looking forward to a great semester at Seacoast Eat Local!
