Brookford Almanac chronicles a year in the life of Luke and Catarina Mahoney who are young, first-generation farmers living their dream of running a biologically diverse farm and organic dairy in New Hampshire. As with many first-generation farmers, they lease their land as they work to build a successful business. But hardship strikes when they learn the lease on their farm will not be renewed and they are forced to look for land in a new community. This documentary is cinema verité at its best, capturing a year in the Mahoney’s lives as they tirelessly work the land, raise their family, and pursue their dreams of farming. The Mahoney’s story is one of old rituals, new practices, and the future of the American farmer.
Created by filmmaker, Cozette Russell and her producer husband, Julian, this film tells the story of a family, and a farm very close to the hearts of many in the Seacoast. Luke and Catarina Mahoney will participate in a Q & A after the film, sharing behind-the-scenes stories, and giving us an update on their progress. Russell’s work often explores the relationship between people and land. She studied filmmaking at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in film, video and new media. She is currently the Program Coordinator at The Film Study Center at Harvard University and lives in Lee, New Hampshire.
Prior to the local film, three award-winning shorts from the Real Food Media Contest will be screened as part of the Real Food Media Pop-Up Festival that is happening across the country. “We were approached by Real Food Media and asked if we wanted to join our fellow Slow Food chapters across the country in presenting some of the winners from their recent competition,” explains Slow Food Seacoast board member Catherine Stewart. “Film is such an excellent medium to explore the realities of our food industry, and we thought it would be a great opportunity to pair some of these international short films with a very special local documentary.” This event will run as a first in SFS’s new Slow Cinema series that aims to highlight local, national and international food issues, explains Stewart. “We hope to show more films in the future that celebrate, question and document the food we eat. There’s lots more in store next year.” More news about future screenings, and other events will be available on the Slow Food Seacoast website soon.
As part of the evening of films, there will be a reception featuring cheeses from Brookford Farm itself.
