This educational event, provided by University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver Volunteers, will showcase sustainable ways to increase self-sufficiency to meet your own food needs. Demonstrations will focus on backyard gardening techniques, food preservation methods, and more.

A day’s worth of educational opportunity; create your own gardening adventure by visiting backyards on our Backyard Locavore Tour around Cumberland County. This year’s tour includes 14 gardens in the areas of Brunswick, Falmouth, Freeport, North Windham, North Yarmouth, Portland, Raymond, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough.

Your day will be self-directed, so pick the sites that interest you! In your ticket booklet, a map of locations will be provided and an online map will be available.

You will see backyard poultry, honeybees at work, plants of all sizes and varieties, techniques for container gardening, square foot gardening, and “Preserving the Harvest” demonstrations with food samples highlighting preservation techniques and unique backyards.
