4th Annual Backyard Locavore Day, August 11

The Backyard Locavore Day returns On Sunday, August 11th, this year! The event is a self-guided tour of backyard gardens around Cumberland County. In addition to the great gardens, each site will have a Master Gardener and a Master Food Preserver with an educational display about a specific topic.

This educational event, provided by University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners and Master Food Preservers, will showcase sustainable ways to increase self-sufficiency to meet your own food needs. Demonstrations will focus on backyard gardening techniques, food preservation methods, and more.

A day’s worth of educational opportunity; create your own gardening adventure in Cumberland County. Locations are in Brunswick, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth (2), Portland (2), Cape Elizabeth (2), Windham, and Falmouth (3).

Your day will be self-directed between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. This will not be a guided tour. Pick the sites that interest you!

You will see backyard poultry, honeybees at work, plants of all sizes and varieties, techniques for container gardening, square foot gardening, and “Preserving the Harvest” demonstrations with food samples highlighting preservation techniques. Many of the gardens feature unique sights, including a model train running through the garden.

Get your questions answered by UMaine Extension Master Gardeners and Master Food Preservers, as well as the homeowners.

You will receive a booklet describing each site and a map showing locations (to be mailed to you in July). The cost is $10/adults; children under age 12 are free.
