Beginning in January 2014, Misty Meadows Herbal Center will be offering a series of workshops on organic and holistic gardening. Topics will include soil health, building compost, mulching, choosing varieties of seeds and plants, weeding, pruning, watering, crop rotation, companion planting, beneficial insects, plant-based fertilizers, natural pest management, and astrological gardening.<\/p>\n

If you are new to gardening and hoping to start a plot of your own this spring, these classes are a great way to get some foundational knowledge on maintaining healthy land and plants and growing your own food. If you are a seasoned gardener, this can be the opportunity for you to expand some of what you know and delve deeper into earth honoring practices.<\/p>\n

Classes will be held\u00a0on Wednesday\u00a0evenings from 6:30-8:30pm in the Learning Center. Classes will start on January 15\u00a0and run to\u00a0February 26, for a total of seven classes in the workshop series.<\/p>\n

The series is $25\/class or $150.<\/p>\n

Class 2:\u00a0Seeds and Plants: Selecting Varieties and Planting Techniques<\/p>\n

Various factors to be aware of\u00a0Types of seeds: Open Pollinated and Hybrids Varieties.\u00a0Choosing seeds versus plants.\u00a0Best varieties for a New England climate.<\/p>\n

Class 3:\u00a0Maintaining the Garden: Watering, Weeding, Pruning, Mulching<\/p>\n

Learn practical techniques for:\u00a0How and when to water,\u00a0Identifying true weeds,\u00a0Ways to keep the weeds at bay,\u00a0What and how to prune during which time of year,\u00a0Different types of mulch for different types of soil<\/p>\n

Class 4:\u00a0A Healthy Garden for Seasons to Come: Crop Rotation and Companion Planting<\/p>\n

What is the importance of crop rotation?\u00a0How can I ensure my crops are rotated effectively?\u00a0What is companion planting?What are the benefits of companion planting?\u00a0How can I easily integrate this method into an already established garden?<\/p>\n

Class 5:\u00a0Gardening by the Moon: An Introduction to Astrological Gardening<\/p>\n

We will learn the brief history of astrological gardening and answer questions like:\u00a0How can I grow the healthiest crops while working in harmony with the cycles of the moon and stars?\u00a0Can all gardening activities be done according to these principles?\u00a0How do I know astrological gardening works?\u00a0What are other references I can seek out if I want to learn more about this fascinating topic?<\/p>\n

Class 6:\u00a0Putting the Garden to Rest: Knowledge for the End of the Season<\/p>\n

Topics will include:\u00a0Harvesting,\u00a0Fall Cleanup,\u00a0Over-wintering herbs,\u00a0Extending the season with cold frames and hoop houses,\u00a0Seed saving<\/p>\n

Class 7:\u00a0Planning Your Garden: Mapping Out This Season\u2019s Plot<\/p>\n

How to pick the best spot on your land for your garden.\u00a0Important factors to consider when starting a new garden.\u00a0We will spend time together in class mapping out potential gardens for this season based on the information covered in the previous classes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
