Growing Tomatoes Outdoors: Tips & Techniques

August 2 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

Join us on Saturday, August 2nd from 10:00–11:30 AM at Fat Peach Farm for a hands-on workshop led by farmer Jennifer Wilhelm focused on successfully growing tomatoes outdoors. You’ll get an inside look at Fat Peach Farm’s small-scale, mixed production system, which uses organic practices and a no-till, permanent raised bed approach.

Jennifer will walk us through the unique challenges of growing tomatoes in the open field, especially compared to high tunnel or greenhouse systems. We’ll also explore why most commercial growers choose indoor methods (and why that isn’t a bad thing!).

You’ll learn:

  • Which tomato varieties to choose for your garden.
  • Techniques for trellising, pruning, and supporting healthy growth.
  • Tips for managing soil health, pests, and common diseases.
  • A deeper understanding of the choices farmers make at scale.

To wrap things up, enjoy a guided taste test featuring several tomato varieties growing on the farm. You’ll be able to see and taste the difference variety and method can make. Whether you’re a backyard grower or a small-scale farmer, you’ll learn something new at this workshop!

This is a FREE event. However, registration is required. We hope to see you there!

What to bring: This workshop takes place entirely outdoors, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing sun protection.

Accessability: The primary outdoor area is accessible, but please be aware that the path to the tomato beds includes uneven ground. Unfortunately, there is not a handicap-accessible bathroom available at the farm.

Additional details: This workshop is co-hosted by Seacoast Eat Local and sponsored by Service Credit Union.
